The Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments, Op. 7, from 1881, is the first work of the German composer Richard Strauss to have survived in the concert hall. Although a youthful work, its charm, vivacity, and technical assurance makes it a worthy successor of Mozart's Gran Partita, upon which it is clearly modeled.

The soloists of the London Winds are simply extraordinary. A work of exquisite ensemble. Music, divided into Serenade, Sonatinas, Suite and a Symphony, is fabulous, full of nuances and fiery harmonies. A musical production of luxury, no doubt. Strauss, still writing under the influence of classically-oriented German masters like Mendelssohn and Brahms, scored the Serenade for a wind ensemble very similar to that of Mozart’s great Serenade for Thirteen Winds, K. 361: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns and a contrabassoon for added richness and bass support.
